- Temporary stiffening of warp yam to enable it to withstand the stress and strain of weaving. Often rice or ragi (millet) starch is used in India, and the warp yam is starched in the early hours of the morning as it is stretched between two trestles in the shade. It is removed before the sun becomes too hot.
- In spun silk production, the sorting out of silk into various lengths, also removing the neps and noils.
