Originally a simple backstitch embroidery used to hold cotton layers in quilts in Bihar and Bengal. The ladies layer their old sarees and hold them together by quilting. Then they embroider them with simple embroidery stitches with yarn unravelled from the borders. In Bihar this quilt work is called Sujani. The same embroidery is used on Tussar and pure silk sarees with remarkable results. See A Glossary of Handwoven Silk Sarees.
