Geographical Indications. The Government of India set up the Registry of Geographical Indications (GI) in 1999. This recognises the speciality of manufactured goods, the art and craft traditions of a region, including textile and design. Some of the traditional sarees are with the Registry to protect themselves against fakes and also to ensure that they maintain the purity of the tradition themselves. But many more have to apply for registration.
