The portion of a yarn in a woven fabric that extends or floats, unbound, over two or more adjacent ends or picks. In some weaves floats are part of the technique, as in some brocades. But sometimes floats are formed unintentionally during weaving, either faulty shed formation or slackness in the reed where the weft has not been beaten properly for the weave to be tight. In that case it would be a defect in weaving.
