The process of adding colour to a fibre or fabric by applying a dye. Dyes usually go through some chemical change that binds them to a fibre’s molecules. This can be through a process of absorption, dispersion or a chemical reaction. Dyes can be applied to a fibre or fabric by

  1. immersing it in a container of dye solution,
  2. applying it with a brush or cloth dipped in dye to create subtle or pictorial effects, and
  3. stamping the fabric with wooden blocks dipped in dye to create block-printed patterns.
